Negotiating with Contractor Marketing Agencies
You bid jobs for a living, which gives you a distinct advantage when it comes to negotiation. After you have your short list of three (or so) agencies, ask for two things: a quick exploratory call so you can interview them to make sure they are right for your business, and a quote for 16 hours of work per month.Once you have three quotes for an equal amount of work, you can compare them side by side. It might be tempting to just pick the cheapest. However, as with so many things, the cheapest option might not be best for your contracting business. You don’t undercut your competitors, so watch out for agencies trying to do the same.Sometimes paying too little is as bad as paying too much.At the same time, there is always room for negotiation. If you select the most expensive option, a good possibility is to ask them to meet you halfway between their price and the next lowest quote. If they stick to their price but their work is far and away the best, you may consider moving ahead. But don’t be afraid to hold them to your own high standards.
